Rooting for Raajje

Rooting for Raajje is a program initiated by SIGS to green the small islands which are rapidly being urbanized, with a mechanism for monitoring the planted trees. Trees prevent erosion, purifies the air as well as absorb carbon dioxide making them an important carbon sink that can contribute to the nation’s carbon neutrality goal. We have created an online map to view the trees planted, which are geotagged and can be viewed on the map with pictures of the growth of the plant. The online platform gives details of the type of plant, and information regarding the plant. The platform is accompanied by close collaboration with island communities to plant trees and to continuously take care of the plant and provide images and reports for updating the online map.

JUNE 2022

With the help of the local community in Vaikaradhoo we kicked off #RootingForRaajje by planting 103 trees in their island.

We planted Kuredhi (iron wood) and Midhili (indian-almond). Kuredhi is typically found along the heylhi (coastline) of our islands is important for coastal protection. Midhili is an economically important tree especially for local women who collect the fruit for the kanamadhu nut which is highly priced for its use in local cuisine.
