VICE PRESIDENT

As a founding member of the Small Island Geographic Society (SIGS), Ahmed Jameel (AJ) is dedicated to shaping the organization into a non-governmental, non-profit entity focused on promoting education and awareness surrounding sustainable development in small islands.

AJ leads a team of island geographers at SIGS, leveraging over 25 years of expertise in small island issues. His collaborative approach involves working closely with island communities, NGOs, government entities, and other stakeholders, integrating environmental science, engineering, and disaster management to inform decision-making processes.

Under AJ's guidance, SIGS has pioneered the development of local capacity and technology for island geography data acquisition, analysis and evidence-based policy formulation. His wide-ranging interests include sustainable island development, climate change adaptation, coastal zone management, and environmental education.

AJ's leadership has been instrumental in securing funding from diverse international agencies such as USAID, the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre through the Innovative Challenge and the World Bank through the South Asia Cooperative Environment Program (SACEP), as well as from government and private sector sources. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Environmental Engineering from the University of New South Wales, Australia (2000), and a Master of Science in Hazard and Disaster Management from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand (2007).
